8 tips to freshen up your skincare routine for spring

Posted on March 28, 2021 inBeauty

The buds are out, the clocks have gone forward – it’s official, spring is finally here! However, while we’re rejoicing at the prospect of warmer weather and outdoor events galore, we’ve also been thinking about how the transition will affect our skin…

Gentle reminder that your skincare routine should be changing with the seasons! Luckily, this doesn’t have to require a complete overhaul, though.

Here are our top quick and easy tips for adjusting your beauty routine for springtime and beyond.

Remember your SPF

No prizes for guessing that SUNSCREEN is top of our list for transitioning into the sunnier months. While we trust you’ve all been applying it rain or shine throughout the year, now’s the time to up the ante.

Reapply, reapply, reapply!

Fewer daylight hours and lower UV levels mean we can just about get away with not reapplying in winter, but in the spring and summer this is a huge no-no!

Not only do we tend to be outside more, meaning more sunlight exposure, but UV levels also increase in strength. Plus, that happens earlier than you think. Ever been badly burnt in April? That’s because the sun is just as strong as in late August.

According to dermatologists, SPF should be reapplied every two hours, but this increases if you’re sweating a lot or in the water, so be mindful. We know it’s a pain but your skin will thank you.

Opting for a lightweight, non-greasy option will also make it easier. Read about LBB founder Nnenna’s favourite SPF here.

Invest in after sun care

Prevention is the always the better cure. However, if you DO end up getting sunburnt, you’ll want to apply something soothing and nourishing ASAP.

Keeping sunburnt skin moisturised will not only help heal blistering faster, but also reduce the chance of infection and scarring.

A-Game has your back in this department. Featuring Omega-rich Chia Seed Oil to seal in moisture, miracle oils Moringa and Marula to soothe inflammation and ceramides to repair the skin barrier, it’s a dream for superficial burns.

Exfoliation is key

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that the warmer the weather, the oilier your skin. That’s because hot or humid weather increases oil production in the sebaceous glands, leading to congested pores. All the extra sunscreen can further worsen the problem too.

Luckily, a good exfoliation routine will keep any excess oil under control, as well as slough off dead skin cells – leaving you looking smooth, radiant and youthful!

As a general rule of thumb, experts recommend exfoliating two to three times per week. However, this varies according to individual skin requirements, and what products you’re using. Find out renowned aesthetician Dija Ayodele’s take here.

We especially love Salicylic Acid, which penetrates deep into pores to dissolve debris, while also removing dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. Talk about multi-tasking! Read how it differs from other acids here.

This summertime hero is one of the stars behind Take Off – Touch Down, our prebiotic-infused XL face and body cleansing cloths – A.K.A. the perfect addition to your handbag this summer.

And remember, chemical exfoliants can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so it’s extra important to be vigilant with sunscreen if you’re using them in your routine.

Stay hydrated

We all know to keep our bodies hydrated during the summer months, but what about our skin?

Upping your water intake – read: at least eight glasses per day – will definitely help flush out toxins and boost radiance, but your skin will also benefit from more targeted hydration.

A good hydrating mask is key to an effective spring and summer routine. This is especially true if you’ve switched out your cream cleanser or heavy-duty moisturiser for lighter options.

With ceramides to repair and plump skin, plus Chia Seed Oil to lock in moisture and build collagen, our Hyaluronic Acid-infused hydration balm is ideal as an overnight hydrating treatment. Apply a layer over the face, lips and neck leave it on to wake up with an ultra-moisturised and radiant complexion

Also works on hands, feet, elbows and more! See how here.

Keep skin and body cleansed

Keeping clean is always important in the quest for spot-free, radiant skin. However, it’s especially true for hotter weather.

Excess sweat already puts skin more at risk of spots, thanks to its tendency to clog pores and keep acne-causing bacteria in place. Combine this with the extra dirt and air pollution from more frequent outdoor excursions, and it’s no wonder so many of us break out in the summer!

Washing more regularly and adding an AHA or BHA-infused wash to your routine will help keep face and body acne at bay.

However, while fitting in a quick lunchtime shower can just about be done at the moment, this may be harder to do once we’re – fingers crossed – back to offices, pubs and more in the coming months. Luckily for you, Take Off – Touch Down is essentially a shower on-the-go.

Seriously, we once got a thank you message about it from a Club LBB member whose pipes had frozen!

Complete with acne-fighting Salicylic Acid and Egyptian Geranium and Clary Sage to soothe and ease tension, our spa-inspired biodegradable XL face and body cleansing cloths will have you feeling squeaky clean in no time.

Great for touching up quickly before work drinks, at the park, you name it…

Opt for a lighter scent

You’re probably used to switching up your scent for special events, but what about different seasons?!

While many of us enjoy fragrances with spicy undertones in the winter, these can feel too heavy and formal in the summer, thanks to that extra heat. Instead, we tend to reach for those with fresh, floral or citrus notes.

The good news is, you don’t need to run out to buy a new perfume just yet! Featuring woody patchouli, soothing lavender and uplifting lemon, Flight Mode’s signature nine essential blend is the perfect perfume substitute for spring and summer. Keep this roll on in your bag to never be caught short again…

Bonus, it will keep you calm too!

Double cleanse away the day

Summer means extra sweat, sunscreen and grime, making a double cleanse a great addition to your arsenal.

This just means using an oil or balm to remove makeup, followed by a lighter option, such as a gel cleanser, to rinse it off. Our favourite way to do this is to pair A-Game with Take Off – Touch Down.

With purifying Moringa and Marula oils to dissolve dirt and ceramides to repair the skin barrier, our hydration balm is a fantastic – and mess-free! – first cleanse. Take Off – Touch Down’s combination of gently exfoliating Wintergreen (read: plant-derived Salicylic Acid) and complexion-boosting prebiotic complex, meanwhile, makes it a great option for your final cleanse. See how here.

Not only does this make for a luxurious and thorough cleanse when you’re at home, but it’s also perfect for double cleansing on-the-go!

Thanks to A-Game’s handy tube and spill-proof cap and Take Off – Touch Down’s individually wrapped sachets, both products can be easily thrown into your bag without fear of leakage. Plus, there’s no need for a sink.

Spring clean your cabinet

Spring is the perfect time to declutter your beauty cupboard.

Got products you don’t like or use anymore? Why not give them to your friends or donate them to Toiletries Amnesty.

This charitable organisation works across the UK and abroad to reduce beauty industry waste and end hygiene poverty. Their directory makes it easy to find and donate your unwanted beauty products – unopened or gently used – to the local causes that need them.

You can also recycle your empties with TerraCycle. The innovative recycling company has made a name for itself as the go-to for hard-to-recycle items, including certain beauty products.

As an environmentally friendly brand, it’s important to us that we don’t contribute to the 12 million tonnes of waste that goes to UK landfills each year. That’s why we follow SMART objectives and have ensured that the majority of our packaging is either fully recyclable or biodegradable.

We’d also recommend taking the time to thoroughly wash any skincare tools, as well as makeup brushes or sponges.
